The sound of the rain on the roof. Makes everything feel so cozy inside, just right for drinking a nice cup of coffee and working, and later, a drinking a nice cup of tea and working, and even later, drinking another cup of tea and snuggling up with a purring feline. πŸ˜‰

Appreciations 4.28

Last year on this day, I appreciated a goofy dream…and now I am RE-appreciating it. Hahahaha! (Here’s a bit of the post from last year: Waking up giggling from a screwball comedy dream about returning defective sofas! We were standing out in the rain with our burgundy leather sofa, and the Katharine Hepburn-like character said, “Defective!??! But it rains HARD on sofas!” The Cary Grant-like character (me) said, “Yes, but they are not expected to give up little pieces of themselves in surrender to that rain,” which settled the matter! I love the image of the characters standing under the street light with the rain pouring down on them… and their sofa.Β  Hahahahaha!)

Headaches that very kindly wait until the “must do today” work is done, respond to tylenol enough to allow me to go out with my friends, and send me to bed for a night of catch-up sleep before 10 pm. πŸ˜‰

Spending time with people I adore at our little happy hour tonight. Oh, just so so good! ❀

Another productive, satisfying, and fun DPP Study Group meeting with Amy & Alison.Β  I always learn sooooooo much. πŸ˜‰
Interesting weather today – cool, warm, rainy, steamy, cooler, thundery, dry. Oh Autumn, you are such a funny time. πŸ™‚
Colored pens. I write a lot and they make the writing of things even more fun. πŸ˜€

Wodehouse. The way he phrases things and the interactions between his characters make me giggle. I especially love Wooster’s relationship with Aunt Dahlia. Oh, how this delights me!

More fun words like propinquity.

Nice little chat with Jeff tonight. Soon we’ll be able to chat in person – whenever we want. What?!? How lucky I am to like my family so very much. ❀

The strangeness of insomnia. So rare a thing for me, so interesting to be wide awake at 3 am. Gave me the opportunity to notice fun shadow shapes on my ceiling, like the one that looked like a puppy with its head tilted to the side. Took me a while to figure out where it was coming from. (It was cast by my water bottle in front of my clock). Funny!

IMG_3384Watching the cats investigate and play with the kitty playground of empty boxes as I put away the new t-shirt inventory. Oh, how they love big new boxes!

Doing little projects that result in less clutter, far less paper, and the doing of which produces lost things. Neat!

Fabulous morning with Debb! How great to get to see my cuz 2 days in a row! Delicious breakfast (yes, I got to have gluten free pancakes. In a restaurant!) and thrill-filled shopping trip to Goodwill. Who knew Roseville could be so fun?! πŸ˜›

Excellent afternoon full of productive time – including FINALLY getting my office back in order. Phew!

I was planning to work all evening, but fortunately, my good friend Danny was looking out for me and said we should go to IAGG tonight. So great to see him again — and then what an awesome show! MJ and Andy cross-wove their butts off in a brilliantly intertwined narrative with beautiful choices, stunning metaphors, and mind-boggling call-backs, Butch’s tech work rocked my socks in every set, and Michael and Jeff’s angel-ghosts, machete work, and just plain great improv rounded out a truly terrific show. So good!

Nice morning of working, going outside, working, going outside, working. I love this weather!

Really fun dinner with Debb and her colleague Deb. πŸ™‚ I love meeting new and interesting people — especially those with whom you feel that instant connection and comfort.

Hanging out with Debb at the hotel. With friends as interesting, funny, and smart as her, there’s no need for outside entertainment to make for a great evening. ❀

Appreciations 4.22 – Fun and interesting things & a very long list

Writing stories. I get to do a lot of writing for work, but writing a newsletter or a FB post just isn’t the same as writing a story. πŸ˜› I’d forgotten how much fun stories are. It’s got me contemplating doing NaNoWriMo again this year. Or maybe finishing up that novel I started 7 or 8 years ago. I liked that one. Or maybe just sometimes writing stories because it’s fun to write stories. πŸ˜€

bye bye elmWatching interesting things β€” like the process of taking down our huge elm tree. The workers did it so fast! And what a humongous boom when the main trunk came down. Wow! That shook the whole house!

How strange and light it feels without our elm tree out front. Goodbye, shady friend. ❀

So many things are fun to do. Here are the things I love to do:

Going to bed early sometimes. πŸ˜‰

Appreciations 4.21 – A story

Instead of a list of things I appreciate today, I am going to tell the story of my walk-around-the-block adventure, all the components of which I appreciated. πŸ™‚ It doesn’t sound like it, but it is a LONG story. πŸ˜‰

I haven’t been sleeping great the past few nights, so I wanted to be sure to get out for a walk today. I wasn’t sure how long a walk I’d take – maybe just around the block. But the weather today was my very favorite kind of weather – sunny, warm, breezy, brilliant, so once I got outside, I thought I’d go just a little farther, maybe to the coffee shop. Nah, I wasn’t really in the mood for coffee. It sure felt nice being out in the sun. Maybe I’d just keep walking toward the lake…

Purple flowers 9-10-14Every couple blocks I’d think about turning back, not sure if I’d have the energy for the walk home if I went too far. Each time I decided to keep walking. πŸ™‚ I was enjoying the feeling of the sun on my face, all the pretty little flowers along the sidewalk (I love the shape of these purple ones!), grasshoppers leaping across my path, but I was also still in work mode, planning mode, thinking mode. I wanted to be in the moment, to really take things in during my walk, but somehow couldn’t quite make the shift.

Once I got to the lake, I wanted to find a spot to sit in the sun, so I kept heading west (and was feeling so glad my little heart was up to it. Thank you, heart!) until I found a little grassy spot, no longer wet from last night’s rain, right on the edge of the lake. Mmmmmm. I took off my sweater (black is hot in the sunlight!) and sandals and closed my eyes. When there were no cars going by, it sounded and felt just like it does sitting up on the North Shore – the sound of wind blowing through the leaves, sunlight kissing my bare skin. Mmmmm.

I don’t know long I sat there, but long enough that there was a shift. Aha! Here I am in this moment. Oh, hello! Yum.

dew on rose 9-10-14I put my sandals back on and wandered over to the Rose Gardens. What a heavenly smell! Beautiful roses still harboring a raindrop despite the sun’s sunniness! And the grass looked so inviting – back off with the sandals. Oh, walking barefoot! So many textures – silky, cool grass, warm concrete and brick walkways, sharp pebbly areas. How wonderful to feel all of that!

I made lots of stops (my heart and I worked out a little schedule), each of which was perfect in some way or ‘nother. Sitting by the fountains and being surprised by the sharp coldness of the spray as it blew onto me, walking through the low hanging branches of the trees to sit on a bench on the hill. Perfect.

fountain spray 9-10-14Finally, it was time to head home. Off I go – a different route this time, because it’s so fun to see new parts of my neighborhood. I’d walked maybe 5 or 10 minutes from my last stop and wanted to throw away the gum I’d been chewing… but, uh oh! Where’s my purse? I had my sandals and my phone in my hand, but not my purse. I knew I’d taken it with me when I left the lake β€” but didn’t know where after that I’d left it. Would I have enough energy to retrace all those steps – and still eventually get myself back home?? I turned around and walked (quickly now) back toward the Rose Gardens… and was delighted to find my little red purse sitting right there, under the bench at the last place I’d stopped. Yay! I didn’t have to retrace too many of those steps, after all. Phew! πŸ™‚

On the way home, I noticed how funny it is that one moment it sounds just like the city – cars, planes, kids’ voices from the playground – and then I’d turn a corner and it’d be quiet with only the sound of the wind and the insects breaking the silence. Not so many bird sounds this time of year, but lots and lots of insects droning, buzzing, chirping, singing. I never noticed that before!

I walked along, having fun smiling at people and saying hello as I passed. Some people are so surprised by that! Hahaha! As I got within a block or two of my house, I noticed that my mind kept jumping to the next things to do (lunch and back to work) and planning the rest of my day. I laughed as I reminded myself that there would be time for doing, but that I was busy being right now. Silly ol’ brain. πŸ˜‰

It was a very good walk.

Appreciations 4.20

Waking up a 6 am to anxious, worried thoughts and deciding to paint a picture of all things rosy and bright… and then being so excited about the rosy and bright possibilities that I can’t go back to sleep. Ah hahahaha!

Silly things like the FB status generator. It always makes me giggle. Goodness I love a lot of people and things! πŸ˜€

Looking forward to stuff. I like when the horizon is filled with plans to see friends and be connected. I like when the present moment is full of that, too. ❀
